Sounds boring? Yeah, it kind of is. But every sample could be hiding a piece of history we've never seen.

And to make sure that history doesn't slip away through sloppy work, you need strict procedures—and someone like me.

People ask me why I chose marine archaeology, of all things.

Honestly? I don't think I ever really sat down and thought about it. It was just a feeling, really.

Not a feeling of "liking it"—more like it felt easier.

Even though the work itself isn't exactly easy. But ruins and relics don't lie much. They're simpler than dealing with people. So yeah, easier.

...Though that's not always true either. Dealing with Jelani is easy enough. And sometimes sample data ends up misleading me too...

During the story

The sediment layers in Whalefall Canyon are holding up better than I thought.

Pollution's bad, sure—but at least it's mostly on the surface. Nothing deep enough to fester.

Once it's cleared, the water here should turn out pretty good—healthy enough for more marine life to stick around.

When I find something interesting during sample collecting, I secure it before I even think about studying it. Rory's the opposite—she goes after the lead first and worries about preservation later.

Neither approach is wrong, I guess. I just can't shake the thought of what happens if we don't get a second chance.

She probably can't stand the thought of losing a lead either... yeah.

The Marine Archaeology Team's always had people coming and going. But this time, it's the leader leaving—and that caught me a bit off guard.

Still, I kind of saw it coming. The real surprise? Oliver actually followed through.

I don't know if we'll run into each other again, or who we'll be by then.

...What happened between me and Rory?

She's always rushing ahead when I think we should slow down, skipping steps I think matter, like order is just a suggestion.

When I got upset... I might've said some things I shouldn't have. And it wasn't just about work.

But on the day of the earthquake, when everything was falling apart, she was the one at the controls. And we all made it out alive.

Some things just can't be done if you follow every rule to the letter.

When Oliver decided to leave the team, we needed a new leader. Rory was the one who talked me into it.

Honestly, I didn't really know how to respond when she started praising me... and she laid it on a bit thick.

But Jelani seemed to agree. Didn't expect him to take Rory's side on that one.

Naga, though—he had his doubts.

So I told him I could pull some strings and get that new gear he'd been waiting on. The one he'd been asking for but never got.

...And just like that, he was on board. According to calculations, it was a pretty good deal.

Not sure how long I'll last in this role, or if I'll do it well. But I'll at least try to keep things from falling apart and make sure nothing gets overlooked. That's all I can promise.
